Want to go to Nicaragua this May?

Travel to Nicaragua w/the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center at IU!!

We have an amazing opportunity for students to do volunteer work on an alternative break in Nicaragua this May. We unexpectedly had a student drop out of the alternative break, and have space open on the trip.

Dates: Sunday, May 10th – Sunday May 17th (possibly returning on the afternoon of the 18th depending on flights)

Cost: $550* + airfare**
* Of this $550, you will receive approximately $200 back after the trip, thanks to a generous grant. Amount back depends on cost of group travel (to airport), number of students, etc.
**airfare will be +/- $450 Number of IU participants: 9

DESCRIPTION:
Q: What type of work will we be doing?
A: We will be doing mainly unskilled manual work in the host community, and
will be completing this work with members of the community. In this
impoverished community, we will be helping with community development
and serving basic needs, often by doing construction.

Q: What will our day look like?
A: Days will consist of eating meals together, spending six hours at the work
site (in two blocks), studying Jewish and secular texts together, and
activities with the host community.

Q: What happens before the trip?
A: We will have three orientation sessions as a group in the spring. These orientation sessions will be an opportunity to meet your fellow trip participants, learn about Nicaragua, get detailed information about our service work, and begin the discussion of the connection between Judaism and social justice.

Q: What is the timeline for applications, interviews, and paying?
A: If you know you’d like to go, please fill out the attached application and email me to set up an interview. We’ll buy our plane tickets within the next week. Money is due to me by March 27th.

Going to be Around But Have No Spring Break Plans??

<--- If you will not be seeing any of these over the Spring Break week... Here are some different activities you can partake in to help the week go by a little quicker if you are staying around Bloomington!

ONE OPPORTUNITY!

Girls Inc. will be running a Spring Break day camp for our members Monday March 16th through Friday March 20th. We are from 7:30am-6pm.

Volunteers are needed to supervise girls and help with activities. Activities may include games, art projects, and field trips in the Bloomington Community. If you are interested, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can ensure adequate supervision for our program. We welcome volunteers from IU and the Bloomington Community. This is a great opportunity for students who need volunteer hours for classes but are too busy to volunteer during the semester.

There will be a short orientation for volunteers the week before Spring Break. Volunteers are required to fill out a criminal history background check. All volunteers at Girls Inc. should share our dedication to providing new experiences and building confidence in girls. No prior experience working with children is necessary.

When: Mar 16, 17, 18 7:30 AM - 06:00 PM

Contact: Rachel Dotson, Director Of Program Services , (812) 336-7313

ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY!

The YMCA SPLASH program is a free class available to non-swimmers between the ages of 6-10. The goal is to help them be safe in and around water. YMCA Staff will lead the class and volunteers assist the kids with the skills in the water.

SPLASH is held Monday - Thursday during Spring Break. There is a morning session (8:45-10:45am) and an evening session (4:45-6:45pm).

Volunteers must fill out a Volunteer Application prior to volunteering. Volunteers should feel comfortable in the water.

Habitat's ReStore Warehouse

Warehouse Donation/Pick-Up

Help out in the warehouse, moving newly priced items out to the floor, helping donors by bringing donations into the intake area, and assist the Donation/Intake staff with paperwork, pricing, cleaning, etc. Assist with pick ups of donated materials by traveling with the driver on pick ups. Load donated items onto the truck, and unload at ReStore.

Must be able to lift 60 lbs. and enjoy working in areas that are not always clean (often donors are in the midst of remodeling and it can be messy!)
